Professor Ng Ching-Fai
Prof Ng graduated from the University of Melbourne in Chemical Engineering, earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia and obtained a Post-doctoral Fellowship from the University of California in Santa Barbara the following year. He started teaching at the University of Hong Kong in 1970. In 1985, Prof Ng joined Hong Kong Baptist University (the then Baptist College) as Head of the Chemistry Department. He was the Dean of Science and Chair Professor of Chemistry prior to taking up the post of the President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2001 which he relinquished in July 2010. A renowned expert in heterogeneous catalysis and membrane science and technology, Prof Ng is highly regarded by both local and international peers. Prof Ng’s scope of service goes beyond the academic world. Amongst numerous public committees he served, he was a Member of the Hong Kong Affairs’ Advisor of the Government of PRC, Member of the Preliminary Working Committee of the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong SAR of PRC, Member of Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong SAR of PRC, Member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Deputy to the 9th, 10th and 11th National People Congress, PRC, Member of Research Grants Council, Council Member of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In 2005, Prof Ng was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for his outstanding contribution to higher education and public services.
